The Central Processing Unit - the computer's general-purpose brain. Few very fast cores, great at varied sequential tasks, weaker at massive parallel math.

A brilliant head chef who cooks any dish superbly, one at a time - but for chopping 10,000 onions, you want the army of helpers (GPU).
